The Centre for Animals and Social Justice (CASJ) is a think tank for academics whose goal is to produce research promoting the idea that social justice includes the protection of animals. CASJ believes that governments must take an active role in animal protection, not leaving it up to the whims of individuals or special interest groups. To that end, CASJ seeks to advance animal protection knowledge, and through their research provide the expertise essential to enhancing animals’ social and political status. CASJ produces numerous reports and articles with the aim of embedding animal protection as a core political policy in the UK and other countries, as well as among intergovernmental agencies.

Impact Evaluation:
Tackling important questions
CASJ is currently researching broad questions regarding the nature of political interventions to help animals. Understanding these issues could help animal advocates better improve policy on behalf of all animals. Policy research focused on animals is a neglected area, and promoting research by academics that can inform animal advocates on areas of concern to them is potentially high-value. Additionally, this research can raise the profile of animal protection, leading to more enthusiasm and involvement from policy-makers and other leaders.
Long-term perspective and unclear impact
CASJ is a relatively new organization with a highly specialized focus. With the currently available public information, we are relatively uncertain about the impact of their work, especially given its long-term perspective. However, they seem to be working hard to ensure their research is available where it will have the most impact, such as with policy-makers and advocacy leaders. We are excited to follow their work and look for medium-term indicators of their long-term impact, such as increased inclusion of animal protection in the field of social justice.
