New Harvest advances the field of cellular agriculture (i.e., the development of animal products using cells instead of animals). New Harvest builds the field of cellular agriculture through multi-stakeholder initiatives, policy engagement, and collaborative grant projects. New Harvest’s approach to field-building has contributed to the publication of over 50 scientific works in cellular agriculture, the training of over 35 cellular agriculture experts, and the establishment of three academic institutes dedicated to cellular agriculture worldwide.

Why did New Harvest not receive our recommendation?
New Harvest’s work to increase the availability of animal-free products and increase engagement in animal advocacy is promising because it primarily focuses on animal groups and interventions that we consider high priority. For more information, see their Impact Potential spreadsheet. However, despite their impactful work, we estimate that additional funds would have more marginal impact going to our recommended charities. See 2023 Criteria Methods and Limitations for a detailed explanation of how we conduct evaluations and our 2023 Evaluation Process for information about our decision-making process. While New Harvest did not receive a recommendation from us this year, we recognize them as one of the most effective charities in their space.
Are New Harvest’s programs cost effective?
After analyzing the recent achievements and expenditures of New Harvest’s programs, we assessed the New Harvest Fellowship as particularly cost effective because it combines research as a high-priority intervention category with strong implementation. In contrast, we assessed some of New Harvest’s work in skill- and network-building, such as the learning exchange on social implications of cellular agriculture and the Ph.D. student retreat, as less cost effective because fewer individuals were reached compared to other achievements in the same intervention category. Based on our assessment, we are confident that New Harvest has the key policies and processes in place necessary for healthy workplace conditions, governance, and staff engagement. This was supported by particularly high scores in their staff engagement survey.
How much additional funding could they use?
We estimate that New Harvest has room for $500,000 of additional funding in 2024 and $700,000 in 2025, beyond their current projected revenues for those years.
