The Fórum Nacional de Proteção e Defesa Animal (The National Forum for Animal Protection and Defense, also known as Fórum Animal) has worked for more than 20 years to unite activists and strengthen efforts to protect all species in Brazil. It has formed a supportive network for other NGOs across the nation, with over 100 affiliated groups striving to safeguard the environment, protect animals, and promote the recognition of animal sentience and dignity. Fórum Animal is the only organization of its kind to file a lawsuit against the Brazilian constitution and demand better animal protection laws in the country.

Why did Fórum Animal not receive our recommendation?
Fórum Animal’s work to improve welfare standards and increase engagement in animal advocacy is promising because it primarily focuses on animal groups, countries, and interventions that we consider high priority. We find their work on corporate outreach for welfare improvements to help farmed animals in Brazil particularly likely to be impactful. For more information, see their Impact Potential spreadsheet. However, despite their impactful work, we estimate that additional funds would have marginally more impact going to our recommended charities. While Fórum Animal did not receive a recommendation from us this year, we recognize them as one of the most effective charities in their space.
Are Fórum Animal’s programs cost effective?
After analyzing the recent achievements and expenditures of Fórum Animal’s programs, we assessed their secured cage-free commitments as particularly cost effective because they were implemented ahead of schedule, and the cost per commitment was relatively low compared to most other producer outreach achievements. In contrast, we assessed Fórum Animal’s media outreach work as less cost effective because we had limited information about the quality and reach of the media outlets and generally assess media outreach as a lower-priority intervention.
