What is the unique problem?
China has the world’s largest population of farmed animals—over 56 billion at any given time, including 49 billion farmed fishes. In addition, they have an estimated 190 billion wild-caught fishes each year. Despite some recent shifts, consumption of meat and seafood remains high and continues to drive large-scale animal suffering. Yet, within China, few organizations work to promote plant-based diets or reduce reliance on animal products, leading to limited public awareness and slower progress toward reducing animal suffering.
How does China Vegan Society solve it?
The China Vegan Society (CVS) works to reduce animal product consumption and build a strong coordinated vegan movement across China. Through national events such as the Vegan Summit and Vegan City Fairs, alongside certification programs and fellowships, CVS promotes plant-based lifestyles, fosters community engagement, and expands the awareness of veganism. By navigating China’s unique social and political environment, CVS is creating space for diet change and animal advocacy in one of the world’s most influential food systems.
Recent Key Achievements
Established themselves as a leading force for veganism in China, revitalizing and diversifying the country’s vegan community and advocacy approaches.
Published China’s first vegan food certification system and launched the country’s first app dedicated to vegan events.
Organized an annual Vegan Summit and monthly city fairs across China to expand audiences and strengthen engagement with plant-based initiatives.
Conclusion
China Vegan Society (CVS) works to strengthen the vegan movement and reduce animal product consumption in China, aiming to lessen the immense suffering experienced by billions of animals raised and killed for food. This work has particularly high potential for impact, given the scale of China’s food system and the relative neglectedness of plant-based and pro-animal initiatives in the region. While CVS shows strong promise and early successes in community building and raising awareness, its track record remains limited, and evidence on program effectiveness is not yet sufficient to assess their impact relative to our current Recommended Charities.
