2025 Evaluated Charities
Below, we summarize the key factors that influenced our decision whether to recommend each evaluated charity. For full context, we encourage reading each charity’s individual review first (and they are linked below), as the points here build on those details.
Recommended Charities
Summary of cruxes:
- Relatively high cost effectiveness for their past accountability work regarding corporate commitments for cage-free layer hens2 and broiler chickens,3 comparable with The Humane League under reasonable assumptions.
- High potential for their other programs (advocacy for fishes, shrimps and layer hens) because of the potential scale and tractability of advocating for those animal groups in Spain.
- Demonstrated a propensity to adapt their strategy and tactics based on new research and evidence.
- Minor risk of diminishing marginal returns of seeking new commitments.
- Minor uncertainty based on the limited track record for accountability work generally.
Summary of cruxes:
- Very high cost effectiveness of their two core programs.
- Minor concerns about the ethics of providing free stunners and working directly with farmers to help them improve their processes.
- Minor concerns regarding the relatively small body of evidence for interventions that improve shrimp welfare.
- Minor uncertainty around the likelihood of shrimp sentience and their capacity for suffering.
Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira
Summary of cruxes:
- Relatively high cost effectiveness for institutional meat reduction work and a strong track record of partnerships with influential parties in Brazil, a high-priority country.
- The results of this program are comparable to Better Food Foundation’s higher education plant-based defaults program, but with more consistency over time.
- Minor uncertainty about the cost effectiveness of movement-building activities because of the diversity of tactics.
- Minor risk of small animal replacement.
Summary of cruxes:
- Relatively high cost effectiveness for their past accountability work regarding corporate commitments for cage-free layer hens and broiler chickens, along with impactful outcomes from their Open Wing Alliance.
- Compares somewhat favorably with other charities doing corporate commitment campaigns, such as Animal Welfare Observatory.
- Well placed to influence the success of future corporate commitments.
- Minor uncertainty because of the limited track record for accountability work.
Summary of cruxes:
- Accelerating the growth of wild animal welfare science and finding impactful interventions sooner is plausibly competitive with the cost effectiveness of other Recommended Charities.
- Though at an early stage, the logic and reasoning of their theory of change are robust and have been validated by some experts in the field, and there have been promising, tangible steps toward moving the theory of change forward.
- The planned project to accelerate the development of rodent contraception seems particularly tractable and can lead to short/medium-term impact on many animals.
Other Evaluated Charities
Summary of cruxes:
- The higher education plant-based defaults program has been relatively cost-effective, but there is uncertainty about whether this level of cost effectiveness will continue, because the majority of their recent impact comes from a single win.
- The impacts of their other large programs—running a plant-based NGO network and influencing the climate movement to promote plant-based diets—are highly uncertain.
- Expert opinions about BFF’s programs were mixed, and minor uncertainty remained about their strategic prioritization.
- There is a minor risk of small animal replacement.
Summary of cruxes:
- Their research is high-quality and pre-registered, their research library and research support are valuable and well-respected, and experts we consulted provided positive feedback.
- We had concerns about the limited evidence of Faunalytics’ programs significantly influencing advocates’ effectiveness.
- We had minor uncertainty about their strategic prioritization, as we think they should place more emphasis on synthesizing insights rather than summarizing them, and also provide more support to organizations so that they are able to effectively incorporate research into their programs.
Summary of cruxes:
- Their lawsuits are well-reasoned, creative, and strategic, and—on expectation—have very high cost effectiveness.
- We had low confidence in our cost-effectiveness calculations, even with expert feedback, because the likelihood of future wins is difficult to predict without a track record of past wins.
- We also had some uncertainty about the types of welfare improvements that would be made by companies to demonstrate compliance.
Summary of cruxes:
- Deep and high-quality investment in fellows and alumni.
- Strong monitoring and evaluation with a constant strive for improvement.
- Uncertain long-term impacts of alumni, whether they are significantly stronger advocates because of the fellowship, and whether they fill key talent bottlenecks.
- Minor uncertainties about the high cost of doing this work well.
