Announcing the Animal Charities Under Evaluation in 2024

Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) spends several months each year rigorously assessing animal advocacy organizations to identify the ones that can create the most significant impact for animals using additional donations. Our aim is to identify the most impactful giving opportunities for donors seeking to contribute to a world where all animals can flourish.

We are thrilled to announce that 10 charities have successfully passed this year’s application phase and are currently undergoing comprehensive evaluation. Among these are four current Recommended Charities being re-evaluated before their two-year recommendation status expires: Çiftlik Hayvanlarını Koruma Derneği, Dansk Vegetarisk Forening, Fish Welfare Initiative, and Sinergia Animal.

On November 12, 2024, some of this year’s evaluated charities will be awarded ACE’s two-year recommendation status. They will join the six charities recommended in 2023: Faunalytics, Legal Impact for Chickens, New Roots Institute, Shrimp Welfare Project, The Humane League, and Wild Animal Initiative.

All charities evaluated by ACE exhibit significant potential in running effective programs and engaging in impactful work—even those that are not ultimately recommended are likely among the most effective in their respective fields. Below is an overview of the 10 charities under evaluation in 2024.

Charities Participating in 2024 Evaluations

Alianima is a Brazilian nonprofit that works to banish the worst animal agriculture practices, promote accountability among institutions and consumers, and improve the lives of layer hens, pigs, broiler chickens, and fishes. The organization has a technical team of specialists dedicated to addressing animal welfare issues in the agriculture sector, including veterinarians, animal scientists, and biologists. They also collaborate with government representatives who have scientific knowledge to ensure that the cause is taken seriously in a country economically driven by agribusiness. Alianima deals with the issue by considering cross-cutting themes such as environmental conservation, food security, and social justice.

Animal Society is a German-based nonprofit founded in 2020 with the ultimate aim of ending animal suffering. Their primary goal is to strengthen the political representation of animals, as animals are affected by political decisions, yet their interests are systematically neglected. Through campaigns, research, and movement-building, Animal Society enhances transparency in animal politics and promotes political engagement. Furthermore, Animal Society campaigns for public policies supporting a gradual exit of the use of animals for food.

Aquatic Life Institute (ALI), a U.S.-based organization with international reach, strives to alleviate the suffering of trillions of farmed and wild aquatic animals caught in the global seafood system. ALI achieves this by advocating for improved certification standards, influencing corporate practices, and shaping government policies. ALI’s efforts, amplified by the collective power of its coalition of over 140 dedicated member organizations, aspire to create a more humane world for aquatic life.

China Vegan Society focuses on movement building across China, aiming to advance the vegan lifestyle to the mainstream. Since their founding in 2021, they have launched the nation’s first-ever vegan food and beauty care certifications, hosted an annual vegan summit, incubated city vegan fairs, and implemented a Vegan Action Fellowship.

Çiftlik Hayvanlarını Koruma Derneği (CHKD), also known as Kafessiz Türkiye, is a Turkish organization that is primarily dedicated to improving farmed animal welfare standards—in particular, farmed chickens and fishes. They achieve this through corporate outreach, individual outreach, and media outreach. They also engage in research, education, and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen the animal advocacy movement.

Dansk Vegetarisk Forening (DVF) is a Danish organization dedicated to increasing the availability of animal-free products, strengthening the animal advocacy movement, and reducing the consumption of animal products. DVF specifically engages in policy work on agricultural reform and the right to access plant-based food, as well as corporate and institutional outreach to food companies to make plant-based options more available. They also conduct research, run a product-labeling scheme, offer an educational program for children and youth, and lead a public outreach program promoting plant-based nutrition.

Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is one of the few organizations working exclusively on improving the welfare standards of farmed fishes. The majority of their work takes place in India, but they also work in China and the Philippines. They run the Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture (ARA), which sets continually improving welfare standards and implements them with carp farmers in the field in India. FWI also engages in corporate outreach to improve fish welfare across the supply chain and conducts field research that informs improvements to welfare standards.

Good Food Fund is at the forefront of food systems transformation in China. Since launching in 2017, they have hosted the annual Good Food Summit and built a national action hub connecting food systems stakeholders. Their Mama’s Kitchen initiative was named one of the global Top Visionaries by the Rockefeller Foundation’s 2050 Food Systems Vision Prize.

ProVeg International is a food awareness organization working to transform the global food system by replacing 50% of animal products globally with plant-based and cultivated foods by 2040. ProVeg engages with all relevant stakeholders to create a food system where everyone chooses delicious and healthy food that is good for all humans, animals, and our planet. With offices in 12 countries across four continents and more than 200 employees, ProVeg creates global impact.

Sinergia Animal operates in Indonesia, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru. They work to improve farmed animal welfare standards, increase the availability of animal-free products, decrease the consumption of animal products, and strengthen the animal advocacy movement. Sinergia Animal engages in corporate outreach to secure animal welfare commitments from major retailers. They also engage in investor and media outreach, policy work, investigations, individual and producer outreach, institutional outreach, and research.
