Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations links animal protection agencies throughout India, provides resources to activists, and leads campaigns on specific issues. To strengthen local organizations and activist networks, they seek to establish local federations which allow organizations to share information and resources, and they organize workshops and mentorship programs. They also run their own campaigns to promote veganism, reduce the use of animals in laboratories, and address other gaps in the Indian animal protection movement’s activities.

Impact Evaluation:
Strong Work for Farmed Animals
FIAPO works to protect farmed animals on multiple levels. They have fought the expansion of the factory farm model to India’s dairy industry, with some success. They have also participated in legal action against egg producers keeping hens in battery cages, claiming that this practice violates India’s animal protection laws. Finally, they run a vegan outreach program modeled after campaigns in the United States, including surveying participants to estimate impact. We think all these activities have the potential to help animals highly effectively, and that FIAPO is taking appropriate steps to increase their understanding of these programs’ effects.
Movement Building
FIAPO also engages significantly in building the animal protection movement in India by strengthening existing organizations and training advocates. We believe that this work has the potential to be highly effective over the long term, although we do not have a strong understanding of the results to date, in terms of increased movement capacity. We also note that movement building is likely to be particularly effective insofar as it aids organizations and activists who are highly concerned with directing their own activities to help as many animals as possible, whereas FIAPO’s activities seem to attempt to strengthen all sectors of India’s animal protection movement equally.
Varied Campaign Priorities
FIAPO states that they campaign in areas which affect many animals. However, it isn’t clear that they have a strong sense of the comparative magnitude of various problems; alongside their farmed animal campaigns, they run campaigns against the use of animals in laboratories and for better treatment of feral dogs. In particular, it appears they they spend relatively large amounts of effort on animal experimentation campaigns, considering that, in India as elsewhere, there are many fewer animals in labs than on farms.
