What are Movement Grants, and how do they work?
Movement Grants is our grant program aimed at building and strengthening the global animal advocacy movement. We are interested in funding groups working on various approaches to animal advocacy, especially those that are underfunded, target large numbers of animals, and are in regions with a relatively small animal advocacy movement. We provide Movement Grants for three main reasons:
- We believe that a broad, pluralistic animal advocacy movement is more likely to be resilient—and hence more impactful—than a narrow, monistic animal advocacy movement.
- There is little available evidence to support the effectiveness of any given intervention, and we think that animal advocacy is more likely to be successful by continuing to fund a wide range of interventions.
- Many countries do not yet have a well-established animal advocacy movement—by funding projects in those countries, we can build up the movement in neglected regions and address animal suffering as a global problem.
Donations to Movement Grants will be distributed to promising projects around the globe working to reduce animal suffering. The annual disbursement will be determined by the review committee. Applications open in February each year.

In April, we granted $1.39 million to a diverse group of 48 charities, organizations, and individuals from around the world3. Our goal for this round was to direct a substantial portion of our funding towards capacity-building projects, and we met this goal by funding 42 capacity-building proposals. We also hoped to fund a significant number of proposals supporting legal and policy work. We did not receive as many proposals as we hoped we would in that area, and we funded only 9 of them. Of the remaining grants, 31 are funding projects aimed at influencing public opinion, 9 are funding projects aimed at influencing industry, and 17 are funding projects aimed at building alliances. FAQ
The Recommended Charity Fund supports only ACE’s currently recommended Top and Standout Charities, while the Movement Grants program supports a wider range of promising projects. Movement Grant recipients may include charities and programs that we feel show promise and are worthy of funding, though they may not meet all of our criteria to be evaluated and considered for a Top or Standout recommendation. For example, more than 70% of our Movement Grants recipients from Round 6 had budgets under $100,000 and were thus too small to qualify for our main charity evaluations program. We influence substantially more funding to our Top and Standout Charities, so they need to be large enough to absorb and utilize the funds that a recommendation may bring in.
Essentially, Movement Grants casts a wider net and may invest in more speculative or early-stage programs, while the Recommended Charity Fund offers donors more predictability. Donors who are interested in higher-risk/higher-reward giving or building the animal advocacy movement in new regions may be more drawn to Movement Grants, while donors who are more risk-averse and want more certainty in their giving may find the Recommended Charity Fund to be a better fit.
Donations will be distributed to promising charities from around the world as determined by the program’s review committee, which usually consists of three to five members of ACE’s research team. We are likely to fund a wide scope of charities, organizations, and individuals that are not on our list of recommended charities but that are pursuing important work within the movement. We particularly focus on approaches that are underfunded, target large numbers of animals, or are in regions with a relatively small animal advocacy movement. Details on our grantmaking process are subject to change as our thinking evolves.
For more detailed information on our thinking during our sixth round of funding, please see our official announcement.
